The Burlington Public Library is not an Internet provider, but an information provider with the Internet functioning as a tool in this service. The library provides Internet access for the educational and research needs of its patrons. In order to maximize accessibility and insure fair availability, the Library Board has instituted the following policy. In order to use Internet access, patrons must read and agree to follow the policy, including all rules, restrictions, procedures and guidelines. Library staff will assist you in using the Internet as time permits. We do not have the personnel to offer in-depth training. Internet access in the adult department is available to adults with a valid Burlington Public Library card, or valid picture I.D. Internet access in the adult department is available to children with written permission of their parent or legal guardian for each session. The Burlington Public Library does not censor, endorse, monitor or control sites available on the Internet. Some sites may contain materials which some patrons may find controversial or inappropriate. Some sites may contain inaccurate information. As with all library materials, patrons are encouraged to select and evaluate the materials their family will use.Internet Use Guidelines
All users of electronic information resources such as the Internet are expected to use these resources in a responsible manner, consistent with their educational and informational purposes. All users must agree to follow the rules and regulations set forth in the Internet Use Policy and Guidelines. The library reserves the right to end a patron’s use of Internet access if the patron breaks any of these rules. By using Internet access provided at Burlington Public Library, you agree to the following guidelines:- Patrons accept the responsibility to verify information. Parents accept the responsibility to monitor and supervise their children’s access.
- To receive wireless Internet access through the Burlington Public Library, a patron must provide his or her valid drivers license, state ID card, or library card. Children under 18 must have a parent come to the library and sign permission cards. Internet access is nontransferable. Patrons allowing others to use their passwords to gain Internet access will have their access through Burlington Public Library terminated.
- Patrons should install personal firewalls and virus protection on their equipment before accessing the Internet. The Burlington Public Library is not responsible for damage to patron equipment that results from accessing the Internet.
- The library does not allow use of its Internet access to perform illegal activities; to reach obscene or objectionable material; or to access or participate in chat rooms or interactive messaging (like Yahoo, MSN or AOL instant messaging.)I have read and agree to follow the policies, guidelines and restrictions imposed by the Burlington Public Library for Internet Access.
